Cover Image Just as hopping kangaroos bounce along the ground using musculoskeletal springs to store elastic energy, humans and other animals also use bounding gaits in which their legs behave like springs. As a step toward understanding whether the stiffness of the musculoskeletal system is adjusted to accommodate the variety of terrain in the natural world, Ferris and Farley (J. Appl. Physiol. 82:15-22, 1997) have examined the interaction of leg stiffness during human hopping.
