Cover: The April-June 2001 Highlighted Topics series explores the physiological and genomic consequences of intermittent hypoxia. As depicted on the cover, a number of pathophysiological conditions (e.g., obstructive sleep apnea) can result on exposure to intermittent periods of hypoxia. This intermittent exposure to hypoxia is transduced by intracellular signaling cascade involving changes in the expression of HIF-1alpha . We acknowledge Steve Graepel, illustrator for the cover design. This illustration is copyrighted by the Mayo Foundation and reproduced with permission.
