Cover Image Cover: The October through December 2003 Highlighted Topics series explores the physiology of aging, which is a continuous process from birth to death. In this series, the physiological changes associated with aging are examined based on a systems approach. Theories of the aging process and underlying mechanisms are explored. Certainly, it is obvious that much remains to be learned, and future research will need to fill these gaps in knowledge, not only to extend life but also to improve the quality of life with advancing age.
